Abstract

This study seeks to explore the ruling of becoming a member of the United Nations from a theological perspective. It specifically seeks to address whether mere membership in the United Nations constitutes major Kufr (disbelief). This study does not intend to explore the issue of whether membership in the United Nations is permissible nor does it aim to examine the pros and cons of such an affiliation.

This study is divided into the following two sections:

First: Defining what is meant by the United Nations.

Second: Exploring whether Islamic theology accommodates membership in the United Nations and specifying the most important religious premises underlying this examination. Furthermore, there will be an exposition of whether such a membership warrants excommunication from Islam.

Thus, this study is only concerned with explaining this particular issue through a theological lens and is not concerned with covering all the intricate details surrounding the subject overall.
